Sport Events in Berlin

Whatever time of year you come, there's plenty to keep you busy.

Spectators have the choice of watching Ice-Hockey, American Football, Basketball, or follow the fate of Berlin's football (soccer) team - BSC Hertha, in the company of surprisingly amiable crowds.

The National pony and trap race takes place at Marienfelde, and, in the East, Hoppegarten provides a traditional day at the races.

A winter visit? Although Berlin lies in the middle of a plain, an improbable five ski slopes are at your disposal, together with in- and outdoor skating rinks, on the surrounding lakes, or simply in public squares.

Follow it up with a trip to a Sauna or swimming bath, like the palatial reconstructed oriental Public Sauna in Neukölln, or the vast 50 metre pool of the newly built near the Berlin Arena (Velodrom).

In summer Berlin's city-wide cycle lanes will take you safely and quickly to the edge of the city, to forests like Grunewald, and lakes like Müggelsee, where you can idle away the time fishing or hire a rowing or paddleboat for a few hours.

Golf and mini-golf, tennis and yoga, skate-boarding and martial arts, balloon rides and bungee-jumping - you take your pick. Or perhaps an attempt at one of the artificial climbing walls for the family album.

Whether spectator or competitor don't miss the Berlin Marathon in September. And for soccer fans, don't forget, in 2006 Berlin hosts the World Cup.
